Who You Say He Is Determines If You’ll Open the Door

Mark 6:1–6

He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief.

The Issue

We discussed in the previous article that who you say Jesus is can shape your entire life.
But in His own hometown, people couldn’t see beyond the ordinary.

They said,

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary…?”

They reduced the Son of God to a man they grew up with a familiar face from a small town.
And because of who they said He was, the Scripture says “He could do no mighty work there.”

Their unbelief shut down the miraculous.
Not because Jesus lacked power, but because they lacked faith.

Faith Unlocks Possibility

Mark 9:23 tells us plainly:

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

Who you say Jesus is depends on how well you know Him.
And how well you know Him depends on where you’re looking for Him.

The Bible is where you get to know Jesus, His heart, His mission, His compassion, His promises.
John 5:39 says,

“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.”

Every page of Scripture whispers His name.
It reveals who He is, why He came, what He feels toward you, and what He longs to do in your life.

As you spend time with His Word…thinking, praying, and reflecting you begin to see that His promises are personal…they are for YOU.
They’re not just words on a page; they’re living, breathing truth that takes root in your heart.
And when they do, you’ll see those promises come alive before your eyes.

I’ve seen it and lived it.
So have countless others.
Time and time again, people testify of how God pulled them out of addiction, fear, depression, sickness, and despair and restored what life had stolen from them.

So What Should You Do?

Start with these two promises:

  • Deuteronomy 4:29“But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

  • Jeremiah 29:13“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

That’s God’s guarantee.
If you genuinely seek Him - you will find Him.

I’m so confident in His Word that I dare you to try it.
Seek Him.
Not because of what I say, but because of what He promises.

When we begin to seek God, we soon discover that we’re not the ones who started the search at all. The stirring inside us to look for Him is actually His Spirit drawing us first. While we think we’re reaching out to find Him, He’s already standing at the door, knocking, waiting for us to open. Our seeking and His knocking meet at the same door, the place where relationship begins.

What Are You Afraid Of — the Stranger at the Door?

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…” — Revelation 3:20

It’s understandable to hesitate before letting a stranger into your house.
You want to know who they are, what they want, and whether you can trust them. That’s just human.
But here’s the truth: Jesus is not a stranger.

He has been quietly knocking on the door of your heart for a long time.
You might not have noticed it at first. Maybe you thought it was coincidence, or conscience, or just a thought that wouldn’t go away. But that gentle stirring, that whisper reminding you there’s more to life than this, is Him.

He has been calling your name.

Not shouting or forcing His way in, but softly and persistently tapping on the door.
He is patient because He loves you. He has been waiting for you to open up.

He doesn’t come to condemn; He comes to restore.
He isn’t looking for religion; He’s looking for relationship.
He doesn’t want your perfection; He wants your trust.

Every time you’ve felt that nudge to pray, every moment something inside you whispered, “There’s got to be more,” that was Him.
He has been with you through every failure, every dark night, and every tear you thought no one saw.

And here’s the beauty: when you open that door, you don’t lose anything worth keeping.
You don’t lose your identity, your joy, or your freedom. You gain everything your soul has been craving…peace that holds, love that doesn’t fade, and a purpose that outlasts every storm.

He isn’t standing at the door with judgment.
He’s standing there with open arms, saying, “I’ve been here the whole time. Will you let Me in?”

You’ve tried doing life on your own strength. You’ve patched the cracks, held things together, and pretended everything’s fine. But deep down you know something is missing.

That something is Him.

When you finally open that door, you’ll find He was never a stranger after all. He was the One who knew you before you were born and has been calling you back home ever since.

You won’t lose anything by opening that door.
You will gain everything.

Faith Is the Vehicle That Moves the Hand of God

Remember how it all began in Mark 6?
Jesus had already performed 11 recorded miracles and countless healings before returning home.
He had calmed storms, cast out demons, healed the sick, and even raised the dead.

Yet when He stepped into Nazareth, all they saw was the carpenter.
And that unbelief stopped the supernatural in its tracks. The people’s unbelief is striking because He has already demonstrated overwhelming miraculous authority across Galilee.

Here’s a quick overview of what they ignored:

  1. Casting out an unclean spirit — Mark 1:21–28

  2. Healing Peter’s mother-in-law — Mark 1:29–31

  3. Healing many sick and demon-possessed — Mark 1:32–34

  4. Cleansing a leper — Mark 1:40–45

  5. Healing a paralytic — Mark 2:1–12

  6. Healing a man with a withered hand — Mark 3:1–6

  7. Healing many by the sea — Mark 3:7–12

  8. Calming the storm — Mark 4:35–41

  9. Delivering the Gerasene demoniac — Mark 5:1–20

  10. Healing the woman with the issue of blood — Mark 5:25–34

  11. Raising Jairus’s daughter — Mark 5:35–43

And yet He could do no mighty work there.

Why?
Because they said, “Isn’t this the carpenter?”

A simple carpenter can’t do the supernatural.
But God in the flesh can.

The Question Still Stands

Jesus still asks today,

“Who do you say that I am?”

Your answer determines how much room you give Him to move in your life.
If you see Him only as a good teacher or distant historical figure, that’s all He’ll be to you.
But if you see Him as Lord, Savior, Healer, and Friend, you’ll begin to experience the impossible becoming possible.

The choice and the invitation is yours!
