The Most Important Question You’ll Ever Answer

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I the Son of Man am?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Matthew 16:13–15

The Question That Rings Throughout the History of Eternity

What a question to ask… “Who do YOU say that I am?”

Jesus asked more than 300 questions throughout Scripture, yet this one cuts through every generation, every culture, every worldview. It is the question that defines the here and now and also eternity. It defines not just what you believe about Him, but how you live, move, and find rest because of Him.

This question reveals the posture of your heart. It divides speculation from revelation.
It asks not just what you know about Jesus…but who He is to you.

Who Some Say Jesus Is

Across history and religions, opinions about Jesus have been countless but not all are true.

  • Many say Jesus was an historical figure who impacted the world by doing good.

  • Jehovah’s Witnesses say He is Michael the Archangel, a created being, not equal with God.

  • Christian Science claims “Christ” is a spiritual concept , not a person, and Jesus merely expressed that principle.

  • Christadelphians deny His pre-existence and the Trinity, believing He became immortal only after His resurrection.

  • Oneness Pentecostals affirm Jesus is God but deny the eternal coexistence of Father, Son, and Spirit.

  • Mormons teach that He is the spirit brother of Lucifer.

  • Moonies (Unification Church) say Jesus was a man chosen by God who failed His mission, which was supposedly “completed” by their founder Sun Myung Moon.

  • Scientologists group Him with Buddha as a moral teacher of low spiritual rank not divine.

  • Islam calls Him a prophet and messenger, born of a virgin, but not the Son of God and not crucified.

  • Some modern thinkers call Him a social revolutionary, or even a terrorist in His time.

  • Others acknowledge Him as “the Son of God,” but not God Himself.

  • And sadly, many have never heard His name at all.

Every opinion reflects humanity’s attempt to define the divine , yet only Jesus Himself tells us who He truly is.

Who Jesus Says He Is

Jesus didn’t leave His identity open to interpretation. He declared it plainly:

  • John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.
➤ Jesus uses the covenant name of God (Exodus 3:14), claiming equality with the Father.

  • John 10:30–33  “I and the Father are one.”
➤ The Jews understood this as a direct claim to deity and sought to stone Him for blasphemy.

  • John 14:9  “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.”
➤ To see Jesus is to see God Himself.

  • John 11:25  “I am the resurrection and the life.”
➤ Only God holds power over life and death, and Jesus proved it with Lazarus and His own resurrection.

  • John 14:6  “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
➤ Jesus claims to be the exclusive path to eternal life.

  • Revelation 22:13, 16  “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End… I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you.”
➤ Titles reserved only for God.

  • John 14:1  “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.”
➤ Jesus places Himself as the rightful object of faith.

  • John 5:39  “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me.”
➤ All of Scripture points to Him as its fulfilment.

Who the Scriptures Say He Is

He Is God

  • Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born… and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
➤ A prophecy unmistakably declaring the child to come (Jesus) as God Himself.

  • John 1:1  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
➤ Jesus, the Word, is not created… He is eternal and divine.

  • Acts 20:28 “…the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.”
➤ The blood of Jesus is called the blood of God.

  • 1 Timothy 3:16 “He (Jesus) was manifested in the flesh.”
➤ God became man to redeem us from sin …divinity wrapped in humanity.

The One All Things Were Created By and For

  • John 1:3  “All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.”
➤ Jesus is Creator, not creation.

  • Colossians 1:15–16  “For by Him were all things created… all things were created by Him and for Him.”
➤ The universe doesn’t just exist through Him… it exists for Him.

The Author of Our Freedom

  • John 8:32, 36  “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free… If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.”
➤ Jesus is not only the revealer of truth… He is the source of freedom.

The Author of Abundant Life

  • John 10:10 “I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly.”
➤ He came not to modify your behavior, but to transform your being …to bring fullness of life.

The Truth

  • John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
➤ Jesus isn’t a truth or a path ..He is the Truth itself.

  • John 1:14 “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us… full of grace and truth.”
➤ Truth took on flesh …grace walked among us.

  • John 17:17 “Your Word is truth.”
➤ Jesus’ words sanctify because they are truth itself.

  • John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”
➤ The Holy Spirit leads us deeper into the reality of Christ, who is Truth.

  • Revelation 19:11 “I saw heaven opened… and He who sat on it was called Faithful and True.”
➤ Even in glory, His name remains the same: True.

The Great Physician and Healer

Jesus is not only Saviour and Redeemer, He is the Healer, revealing God’s compassion, power, and authority over sickness, sin, and death itself.

  • Exodus 15:26 “I am the Lord who heals you.”
➤ This Old Testament name of God (Jehovah Rapha) finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus.

  • Isaiah 53:4–5 “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… by His stripes we are healed.”
➤ The cross is not only forgiveness, but also healing, both spiritual and physical.

  • Matthew 8:16–17 “He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.’”
➤ Matthew confirms that Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy as the divine healer.

  • Luke 4:18–19 “He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind.”
➤ Healing isn’t just physical, it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual restoration.

  • Matthew 9:6–7 “The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins… then He said to the paralytic, ‘Rise, pick up your bed and go home.’”
➤ Healing and forgiveness flow from the same authority, Jesus’ divine lordship.

  • Mark 5:34 “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
➤ His power to heal is matched by His tenderness to restore.

  • Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
➤ The Healer has not changed what He did then, He can still do now.

But Who Do You Say He Is?

That question still echoes through time.
It’s not just history’s question… it’s your question.

Is He a prophet, a teacher, a moral example… or is He Lord, Saviour, and God?
How you answer determines how you live and where you stand for eternity.

When you know who Jesus truly is, the I AM, the Truth, the Resurrection and the Life  it changes everything.
It gives meaning to your life.

Final Thought

Every religion wrestles with Jesus. Every worldview must decide what to do with Him.
But Jesus doesn’t ask for analysis…He asks for confession.

“But who do YOU say that I am?”

Your answer is the most important one you’ll ever give…because it’s the one that impacts how you walk and live in this life and defines your eternity.
